The Dester Tomato is a highly regarded heirloom variety known for its rich flavor and large, meaty fruits. The tomatoes typically weigh 8–12 ounces and have a vibrant pink color with slightly flattened, beefsteak-like shape. The flesh is juicy and dense, with a sweet, tangy flavor that makes it perfect for slicing, sandwiches, or fresh eating.
Indeterminate plants grow to 5–6 feet tall, producing a consistent yield of these flavorful tomatoes throughout the growing season. They thrive in full sun and need regular watering to maintain the best flavor and texture. Staking or caging is recommended due to the large size of the tomatoes.
First introduced in the 1940's. 80 days from transplant. Originally from Germany. This variety was given to a seed grower named Larry Pierce by an Amish woman named Anna. She was a house cleaner for Dr. Dester and his wife in Indiana. Beautiful pink beefsteaks that weigh up to 1 pound. Won 1st place at the 2011 SSE tomato testing and runner up in 2012. Unbelievable flavor. Good yields.
