The Rutgers Tomato is a classic heirloom variety, well-known for its perfect balance of flavor and versatility. The medium to large fruits typically weigh 6–8 ounces and have a smooth, round shape with a deep red color. The flesh is firm and juicy, offering a well-balanced sweet-tart flavor with mild acidity, making it ideal for slicing, sandwiches, sauces, and canning.
Indeterminate plants grow to 4–5 feet tall, producing an abundant yield of high-quality tomatoes throughout the growing season. These plants thrive in full sun and benefit from consistent moisture to support optimal fruit production. Staking or caging is recommended to help manage the plant’s growth.
75 days from transplant. Developed by the Campbell Soup Company in 1928 and refined at Rutgers University in 1943. It is a cross between Marglobe and J.T.D.
